Сhair of family medicine

History

The Сhair of family medicine was organized in June, 1996 in the frame of the grant programme with the University of Iowa (USA). Besides the long-term cooperation with the American University, proceeding and till the present day, the staff of the Chair carries out joint programmes with Royal British College of general practitioners, Association of family doctors in Norway, Chair of family medicine of the University of Leuvene (Belgium).

At present modern interactive methods are used in the training. The scientific and practical magazine "Russian Family Doctor" is used to continue the training where new lectures, clinical recommendations are published, practice cases are discussed and international cooperation of the Chair is reflected.

In 2008 there was a large-scale guide for general practitioners "Selected lectures in family medicine" 728 pages, where the main problems of our specialty are mentioned. This edition is recommended by Educational and methodical association on medical and pharmaceutical education of higher education institutions of Russia for system of postgraduate professional education of doctors. It includes test tasks of modern design that makes materials processing especially attractive because it allows approaching doctors’ independent professional preparation to the international standards.

Staff of the Chair took part in the development of all versions of the State educational standard in preparation of general practitioners. All teachers of the Chair of family medicine are members of the All-Russian Association of general practitioners, the St. Petersburg regional association of family medicine experts, the European Academy of teachers of family medicine.

The Chair includes not only training of family doctors. The level and quality of preparation of teaching structure allows training experts of various profile: teachers of similar chairs, therapists, cardiologists, doctors of the centers of prevention and health, medical registrars, and also persons without medical education, interested in the training of the emergency preliminary aid.

In 2011 the Chair began preparation of students concerning polyclinic therapy.

Head

 

Head of the Chair - professor Kuznetsova Olga Yurievna, D.Sc., honored employee of the higher school, founder and Head of the Chair since 1996, chief specialist in general medical practice of the North-Western federal district, chief specialist in the general medical practice of Healthcare Committee of the government of St. Petersburg, chairman of the city certifying commission on general medical practice, Vice-President of the All-Russian Association of general practitioners, chief editor of the magazine «Russian Family Doctor». Author of more than 300 scientific works. She leads the course of lectures on urgent, palliative medicine, public healthcare, and methodology questions of family medicine teaching.

 

Employees

 

Experienced teachers work in the collective of the Chair: 5 professors, 7 associate professors and 14 assistants who were trained abroad in the field of cardiology, surgery, ophthalmology, paediatrics, neurology and family medicine. Staff of the chair took part in the development of all versions of the State educational standard in preparation of general practitioners. All teachers of the Chair of family medicine are members of the All-Russian association of general practitioners, St. Petersburg regional association of experts of family medicine, European Academy of teachers of family medicine.

  • Professor Frolova Elena Vladimirovna is the assistant of the Head of the Chair on scientific work. Professor Frolova E.V. was recognized as the Best teacher of family medicine by the All-Russian Association of general practitioners (2008). Since 2007 she is the member of the Council of European Academy of teachers of family medicine.
  • Associate professor Degtyaryova Lyudmila Nikolaevna is the assistant of the Head of the Chair for teaching and studies. She was trained in the USA, Norway and Great Britain.
  • Associate professor Lebedev Anatoly Konstantinovich is the assistant of the Head of the Chair of pre-diploma education. He passed training in Sweden, Finland, Israel and has more than 70 scientific and teaching works.
  • Associate professor Moiseyeva Irina Evgenyevna is the responsible for work with clinical interns. She passed training in Great Britain and Finland.
  • Assistant Gurina Natalia Alekseevna is the responsible for international work. Master of public health and healthcare, PhD, is the responsible secretary of the magazine «Russian Family Doctor». At present she is the principal investigator in the project «Crystal» (www.crystalproject.ru).
  • Associate professor Pokhaznikova Marina Aleksandrovna is the responsible for medical work. The expert in the field of pulmonology and general medical practice. The responsible investigator of the Russian-Belgian project RESPECT. She passed training in Belgium.

Services/activity directions

The chair carries out preparation of general practitioners on the cycles of professional retraining and improvement. However we aren't limited to training of family doctors only. The level and quality of preparation of teaching staff allows training experts of various profile: therapists, cardiologists, doctors of the centers of prevention and the centers of health, medical registrars, as well as persons without medical education, interested in skills training of rendering the emergency prehospital service.

On the Chair it is organized a class with manikins and the set of training devices, allowing mastering manual skills necessary for the general practitioner.

The Chair carries out preparation of students concerning polyclinic therapy.

The programme of clinical internship with the specialization in general medical practice includes: theoretical preparation and practical skills instruction in therapy and prevention of internal diseases, surgical diseases, obstetrics and gynecology, paediatrics, neurology, otorhinolaryngology, psychiatry and medical psychology, ophthalmology, dermatovenereology, urgent medicine, adolescent medicine.

Main directions of the international work:

  • Russian-Finnish project "Quality of primary assistance in healthcare". The results of the project are reflected in 4 publications.
  • In the frame of the contract between SPbMAPS and Catholic University Leuven (Belgium) the scientific researches are aimed on studying of features of the ageing processes, early detection of COPD and mechanisms of development.
  • The Russian-Finnish project devoted to the reproductive health of women. Two articles in the international magazines are published. The defended thesis (PhD).
  • Russian-Norwegian project. Two Norwegian guides for teachers and family doctors are translated and adapted, the international conference and two seminars took place.
  • Russian-British project: methodology of knowledge evaluation, training of nurses in teaching at schools for patients.

Clinical sites of the Chair:

  • The main site of the Chair is the University Center of family medicine (Prosveshcheniya pr., 45) equipped according to the international standards. There are about 7500 patients of different sex and age, including children and pregnant women under the supervision of family doctors of the MAPS Center. Staff of the Chair works in close contact with family doctors, give advisory support as specialized doctors and organize clinical analyses of the most difficult patients. Wide diagnostic opportunities, equipment level, introduction of modern technologies of prevention in everyday practice allow decreasing the level of hospitalization and need for calls to ambulance.
